Thinking of getting a job after your studies? Are you transitioning to a new career? Do you want a professional boost to showcase your personal brand? The Faculty of Graduate Studies is pleased to invite you to a newly launched Professional Development Workshop (PD) Series on Effective Communication & Career Building. The purpose of the workshops is to provide you with practical resources to launch or fulfill your career goals. This series includes four modules:

October 21, 2017 Module 1: Improving your writing & editing skills
Intended Learning outcomes:
  • Target your audience and purpose
  • Demonstrate an understanding of professional writing (e.g. different genres/job-seeking documents)
  • Write to persuade through various career-related documents
  • Improve editing skills in written documents to demonstrate a professional presence
October 28, 2017 Module 2: Balancing Act: Choosing appropriate technology with your presentation
Intended Learning outcomes:
  • Target your audience and purpose
  • Choosing your platform
  • Manage technologies with ease to present yourself in various formats
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of face to face and online presentation modes
November 4, 2017 Module 3: Building your personal brand
Intended Learning outcomes:
  • Develop knowledge about personal branding to differentiate yourself in the job market
  • Present a personal brand through storytelling for career transition & development
  • Identify, analyze and leverage your personal brand to move forward
  • Use social media to develop a personal brand
November 18, 2017 Module 4: Getting a job (Cover Letter/Résumé/Interview Techniques)
Intended Learning outcomes:
  • Target your audience
  • Critique cover letters and résumés
  • Preparing for job interviews
  • Knowing where to look for a job
  • Accessing network contacts
  • Raising awareness of using LinkedIn

Cost: $250 for all 4 modules; $75 each module for AU Graduate students & alumni

Cost: $350 for all 4 modules; $100 each module for Graduate students from University of Lethbridge, University of Calgary & University of Alberta.
